Weipa and surrounds

Pennefather River and Weipa

We spent two nights at the relative luxury of Weipa campgrounds before heading bush again. We'd been told how great spot x was so braved the 3-4 hr, vehicle scratching trip up the west coast. We had four nights there and probably could've stayed longer, it was gorgeous.

View from the tent. We camped on the rivermouth. Directly in front of us was a lagoon that had a small creek running into it from the river mouth, beyond the lagoon in this pic is the sea. The lagoon had two crocs living in it, one (which we saw) was 8ft and the other 14ft. We could swim in the little creek at low tide because we could see a long way in either direction, Rob watched for crocs one way and I watched the other while the kids played in the middle - not a particularly enjoyable swim but hey when theres no shower facilities you take what you can get.

I was even inspired enough to get up for the sunrise!

We saw an emu on the road in, very unreal feeling seeing such a big bird in the bush just metres from the vehicle.

Back in Weipa for another two nights, sole purpose to go to the Rodeo. Yeehaa. It was awesome. Little kids first, they were so cute as they were trotted round the ring, with one arm up in the air. Asked Ru if he wanted a go, he looked at me as if I was mad!

Of course where there's animals involved sometimes it goes horribly wrong..

Boys gone feral.. its soo hard to keep them clean up here.
